Flowers [For The Rebels Who Failed]

In 1964 a young anarchist, Stuart Christie from Scotland was arrested in Spain and charged with attempting to assassinate General Franco. The penalty was death by garroting. He was eighteen, far from his home in Glasgow, and could speak no Spanish. The worst part was that the charge was true.

Anarchism encompasses such a broad view of the world that it cannot easily be distilled into a formal definition. Michael Bakunin who did much totransform anarchism from an abstract critique of political power into a theory of practical social action defined it thus; "On a word, we reject all privileged, licensed, official, and legallegislation and authority, even if it arise from universal suffrage, convinced that it could only turn to the benefit of a dominant and exploiting minority, and against the interests of the vast enslaved majority." Lyon 1870.
