'Acute Zonal Occult Outer'
Hosted by Fritz Welch in New York City at The Drawing Room of The Drawing Center, 'Acute Zonal Occult Outer' took place from 8 January 2006 through 18 February 2006. Stitt akshun 'Hypnotozed' 16.00 -19.00 Sat. 28th Jan. 2006
In a curatorial gambit encouraged by the staff of The Drawing Center, the the artists composed a single, rigorously collaborative art installation that was 'a massive wall drawing/sculpture mash-up.'Under Welch's guidance, the installation acted as both the origin of and the platform for performances by renowned or, as the case may be, notorious international artists who work in the fields of Neo-Actionism, Endurance, and Noise.
The inviteed performance participants were Andre Stitt (Wales), Crank Sturgeon [USA], Kim Jones [USA ] and Alastair MacLennan [N. Ireland] .
Through the exhibition's subject matter and forms, Welch hoped to create a multi-layered, subcutaneous formation on which the release of cathartic activity---without disclosing the source of the trauma---could pool, degrade, and stain.
Working separately and sequentially, on different dates and for distinct lengths of time, the invited artists were be given free rein to modify the space in order to accommodate their various activities. By inviting them to participate in the exhibition, Welch created an impulsive and astute, anxious and persuasive relationship between live art-making and drawing.
Examples include ritual performance, demonstrations and installation works such as building decoy airstrips cut out of the bush, with bamboo radio shacks and antennae to receive messages regarding deliveries. Cargo cults function as a fascinating prism projecting back the fundamental tensions within contemporary globalisation.
